News Editor, Jezebel

New York

Gizmodo Media Group (GMG), which is part of Univision's digital arm, Fusion Media Group, is seeking an experienced editor to serve as news editor of its women’s politics and culture site, Jezebel, which reaches some 14 million monthly readers globally.

About the Company:

Gizmodo Media Group is the publisher of the web’s most original and fearless media brands, including Gizmodo, Earther, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Deadspin, Splinter, Jalopnik, TrackRecord and The Root.  As part of Fusion Media Group, we reach an audience of +120 million visitors a month—more than one-third of all Americans.

About the role:

The news editor will be tasked with overseeing Jezebel's daily news stories, from assigning to publication. The ideal candidate will have an innate understanding of the news Jezebel covers and be able to execute a strong editorial focus across a variety of topics. The news editor will work an early morning shift, self-publishing to quickly get the site up to speed, and then assign and edit news stories throughout the day. The ideal candidate knows how to turn a standard news headline into a Jezebel headline and be a master at cleaning up copy.

As News Editor, you should:
  • have 2-3 years experience in a fast-paced digital newsroom;
  • be able to package news stories quickly, from visuals to headlines;
  • have experience managing writers;
  • respond nimbly to news and cultural events with tonally appropriate stories;
  • have significant experience writing, assigning, and editing;
  • be able to turn a straight news story into copy that reflects a strong Jezebel voice and point of view
  • be self-motivated and comfortable publishing to the site with little oversight
  • be organized and detail-oriented;
  • be able to edit and report on a landscape of gender—including non-binary identities—not just "women's issues."

The news editor will report to the editor-in-chief.

This position is in the WGA-E bargaining unit.
